The ordinary things in life, when you really notice them, can be quite extraordinary. Upon my return to Louisiana's bayou country after four decades of city life, many of the familiar details of rural living took on a deeper meaning. Sugarcane fields and wetlands, winding roads and levees all had new tales to tell. The coastal marsh, with its stark beauty of water and grass, has been a special source of inspiration for me. It seems deceptively plain at first glance, but it carries with it a story of wildness and survival, of hard lives and self-sufficiency. It speaks of brutal storms and of glassy, calm mornings. It is the story of Louisiana.
My new home in Pennsylvania is a multicolored place of seasonal changes---wild spring flora and shimmering autumn woods, sparkling snow and endless rows of summer corn.
A sense of place has a profound influence on my painting. Louisiana will forever be part of my heart. Pennsylvania is all new and fascinating. I would like my work to add to both of their stories.
